Check Twice for Motorcycles – ABATE of Florida's Crucial Safety Initiative

ABATE Florida

One of ABATE of Florida Inc’s missions is to educate the automobile driving public on how to look for and be aware of motorcycles. ABATE of Florida Inc. has had their Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Program (MSAP) for many years. They have taught the program to many high school drivers education classes and to civic organizations throughout Florida.

You will likely see ABATE of Florida Inc. booth setups at many bike events and other festivals. These are all volunteers giving their time to promote motorcycle awareness to the general public.

Starting in September, you will notice digital billboards with our safety message for automobile drivers. Currently, digital billboards are up in Jacksonville, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando. These locations were chosen based on the number of accidents involving motorcycles.

ABATE - Bringing Awareness to the Roads

As time progresses, ABATE of Florida Inc. plans to expand this awareness program across the state. They aim to reach a larger audience with the crucial message: "Look out for us on the road." The days of drivers claiming they "didn't see the bike" must end. By reminding drivers that motorcycles share the roads, ABATE of Florida hopes to increase awareness and reduce motorcycle accidents.

This important billboard campaign was made possible thanks to an ABATE of Florida Inc. bill passed by the Florida House and Senate, which was signed by the Governor in 2023. The legislation allowed ABATE of Florida, the Latin American Motorcycle Association, and The American Legion Riders Department of Florida to collaborate in raising awareness and bringing down motorcycle accidents throughout the state.

Where Did the Funding Come From?

If you’re wondering about the funding source, it’s simple: everyone who registers a motorcycle in Florida pays a $2.50 fee as part of the registration. This fee is meant to support motorcycle awareness programs. ABATE of Florida Inc. believed no one was better suited to handle those funds than the people who ride motorcycles daily. The Florida Legislature and the Governor agreed, allocating the funds to ABATE of Florida Inc., along with the other mentioned groups, to work together to reduce motorcycle accidents.
