Guide To Proper Paint and Finish Care: Motorcycle Detailing

As the Spring & Summer riding season is now upon us, it’s time to prepare our rides and knock the dust off! Motorcycle Detailing is an art form that varies widely among riders. From a quick hose down to a meticulous cleaning ritual, the approach to bike maintenance can significantly impact the longevity and appearance of your motorcycle's paint and finish. Here's a comprehensive guide to keeping your bike looking its best while protecting its paintwork.

motorcycle wash

Initial Preparation: Always start with a cool engine and exhaust. A preliminary rinse to remove major road grime and bugs is crucial. Avoid going straight for a sponge; particles missed during this rinse can scratch your paint.

The Basic Wash: Opt for a spray-on, rinse-off wash like S100 Total Cycle Cleaner for a touch-less clean that minimizes the risk of scratches. This method is particularly effective for regular maintenance, preventing the buildup of grime.

Wheel Cleaning: Before the final rinse, tackle the wheels with a spray cleaner designed for the task. Brands like Meguiar’s, Mothers, and Muc-Off offer products safe for various wheel types. Be cautious of cleaners not recommended for powder-coated, bare aluminum, or magnesium wheels.

Drying: An air compressor or leaf blower can effectively remove water from hard-to-reach areas. Use rolled-up microfiber towels for absorption in tight spaces and a damp chamois to gently pull water off body panels and seats, paying close attention to areas that may have been overlooked during washing.

Clay Bar Detailing: For removing fine impurities from the paint, use a clay bar with a detailing spray as lubricant. Avoid circular motions or pressure, and discard the bar if dropped to prevent scratching with trapped particles.

Waxing:

Choose a quality wax and apply it in a shaded area at moderate temperatures. Dodo Juice Hard Candy Wax is an excellent choice for its durability. Apply in gentle, small circles avoiding non-painted surfaces. Buff with a clean pad after drying.

Protecting Non-Painted Surfaces: UV exposure can fade and crack black plastic and rubber components. Wizards Black Renew has proven effective for these areas, maintaining a clean, protected finish.

Exhaust Maintenance: Clean stainless steel exhausts with a wet sand method or a polishing ball and drill for stubborn grime. WD40 can clean most metal exhaust cans efficiently.

Final Touches for Motorcycle Detailing : Finish with the wheels, removing chain lube with a degreaser and polishing with a detailing spray and microfiber towel. A wheel wax can make future cleaning easier by preventing grime adherence.

While this process may seem exhaustive, the benefits extend beyond aesthetics. Regular, detailed maintenance helps identify potential issues early, ensuring your bike remains in prime condition. It's not just about cleaning; it's about cultivating a deeper understanding and connection with your motorcycle, ensuring its longevity and performance.
